AMUC Div 1 Preview:
Will Krank beat their all-time best finish of 6th at AMUC 2017? Is the Gong actually the best city in Australia? Tune in to find out.
Give us a short history of your team
Wollongong (and friends) first appeared as Krank at AMUC2013 in Canberra. With a highest ever finish of 6th in toasty Townsville AMUC2014, Krank is hoping that the other end of the country will provide a great location to go even further.
If you're a returning team, who's in and who's out from last years (or previous years) side?
There has been a bit of a changing of the guard for Krank in 2017, with a lot of Wollongong stalwarts having moved on (read: kicked out of the country) or taken the season off, leaving big cleats to be filled by the younger generation. Notable absences include Tim and Emma Booth, who have taken some time off due to injury and starting up an adventure tour company, which lets the Li siblings, Audi and Mandy, demonstrate how a background of competitive badminton can convert to athleticism on the Ultimate pitch. With just over half the players on the squad returning, be prepared for some familiar faces and some surprises.
What are your goals for the tournament?
There has been a big focus on bringing the enjoyment back to competitive ultimate this season and there is nothing more enjoyable than playing good hard frisbee with a great bunch of Illawarra folk. Watch out for some structured plays (rarely seen in a Wollongong squad until 2017), big skies, some outrageous celebrations and an improvement on last year’s results.
How would you sum up your team in 3 words?
Camaraderie, speed, fun
Who should we be looking out for?
Rosie Dawson – quickest woman on the Crocs, we’re yet to find another player of either gender that can keep up with her unrelenting cuts. Watch out as she becomes a weapon with disc in hand.
Alex PV – tall, fast and agile; match up against him and you’re in for a white-knuckled ride. If he doesn’t beat you on the first cut you better believe he will on the third, fourth or fifth.
Who are you most looking forward to playing?
Having encountered the updated, sexier version of VLS a few times over the season, Krank is keen to finally come away with a win against our youthful rivals. Plus, it’s rumoured a few of the Krank ladies (and Jayden) love any excuse to watch AShep play, even if he’s skying them at the time.
It’s also always great to see how Ultimate’s being done in faraway lands such as Adelaide and Perth, so we’re looking forward to matching up against Vanguard and Sublime at some point in the tournament.
What do you think of the 'endzone decides' rules?
Krank has always believed in the strength of our women so it has not really affected our strategy or gameplay at all. Endzone decides is a great addition to AFDA rules.
If your team was stranded on a desert island and you could only take one other team from AMUC, which would it be and why?
VLS. Well, just Rob DeHollander. We’d be able to fit the entire squad on his torso and use him as a raft to sail back to the mainland.
