AMUC Div 1 Preview:

Vanguard (SA)

By team captain

Vanguard out of SA are looking to make a splash this mixed season en route to WUCC Qualifiers in December.

Team name

Give us a short history of your team

With our eyes firmly fixed on the goal of qualifying for WUCC 2018, South Australian clubs have banded together to create one club for all, Vanguard. Not only does Vanguard aim to compete at Worlds, but also strives to push the development of all South Australian Ultimate players to a more competitive and elite level. In preparation for the WUCC qualifying tournament and beyond, Vanguard attended AOUGCC in Manila, placing 16th as well as VMUC, placing 4th and now AMUC. So where did the name come from? We are a proud bunch in SA, and one quote about our lovely little state really stood out to us. "South Australia has often been at the vanguard of political and social change in Australia". In a similar fashion, this club aims to lead the way for Ultimate players in SA.

What are your goals for the tournament?

We like to use process goals throughout tournaments to ensure we are trying to control only the controllables and are constantly focusing on our game. Therefore we don't have any outcome goals as such. However, we have aimed to be the fittest team at AMUC and will stand by that goal! :)

How would you sum up your team in 3 words?

mongrel, unity, cantguardavan

Who should we be looking out for?

Aussie Beach reps - Andy Badics, Marty Tonkin, Ailsa Enting-Hawke. Bluebottles 2015 rep - Maddy Smith. Players to watch: Anna Roesler - like an energizer bunny on crack, Bertrand Lee Russel - like an energizer bunny on speed, Nathan Dignam - like an energizer bunny on ecstasy (someone drug test this team!), Cookie Nguyen - the throws of a sneaky old ulti player well beyond her years, Andy Badics - grip and rip, Marty Tonkin - Marty likes to party.

Who are you most looking forward to playing?

Friskee - because last time some of the Vanguard players played against them and lost by 2 points "they weren't really trying"

What do you think of the 'endzone decides' rules?

Love it, opens the game up to new tactics and certainly opens better opportunities for women to make a bigger impact.

If your team was stranded on a desert island and you could only take one other team from AMUC, which would it be and why?
Monstars - they have the largest roster, so more people to help hunt for food. Or, worst case scenario, more people to eat once the food runs out ;)
